Phormula Knock Detection

Will the KS-3 or KS-4 be suitable for my car?

Our products have been installed on wide variety of vehicles from motorbike engines, Ford Escorts, Honda Civic Type R, Mitsubishi EVO, Nissan Skyline, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Supra, Ultima GTR and a 2,000 BHP Big Block V8. To date there have been no compatibility issues.

Where should I mount the knock sensor?

The knock sensor should ideally be mounted on the block in line with the point of ignition. In some vehicles this is not an easily accessible location. The KS-3 and KS-4 should still give excellent results provided it is mounted in a location where it is directly coupled to vibrations from the block. Try to avoid locations of excessive heat or where vibrations may be received from other components (VVT solenoid, Throttle body, etc).

Can I get a copy of the instruction manual for my KS-4?

Our product instruction manuals are available to download here.

What frequency should I set when I configure the KS-3 and KS-4?

If you are unsure of the knock frequency of your engine, please use our Knock Calculator as a guide. The frequency does not have to be an exact match as the KS-3 and KS-4 will also analyse frequencies either side of the set value.

What are the differences between the KS-3 and the Knock Analyser Pro?

The KS-3 was designed as a Knock Monitoring/Warning device. It can be permanently mounted to the dashboard and can be used to alert the driver if knock is detected. The Knock Analyser Pro is designed for engine tuners and rolling road operators who wish to listen to the engine whilst tuning or during a dyno run. Both units can be used independently or connected together using out interface pack. See knock monitoring solutions for more information.

Can your products be used on a V6, V8, etc?

Yes. The KS-3, KS-4 and Knock Analyser Pro work on a "V" configuration.

What does engine knock sound like?

See our video clips demonstrating the KS-3 in action clearly detecting engine knock. Towards the end of the demonstration there is an audio sample of knock.

Does the sensitivity of the KS-3 change depending on RPM?

The KS-3 does not require an RPM input to detect knock at low RPM. The KS-3 uses a dedicated knock microprocessor that can detect knock throughout the entire rev range.

How do you workout what Gain setting to use on the KS-3 without listening for knock?

An initial calibration run is required. This involves running the engine through the complete rev range where the engine is known to be operating correctly (i.e not knocking). A Professional Engine Tuner might reduce the boost slightly or retarding the ignition for the configuration run.

I am a dyno operator . I only want to monitor knock whilst the engine is on dyno and log it over a run so I can analyze it with all the rest of the data I log whilst mapping. Which system will do this?

The KS-4 will allow you to log engine knock alongside the data that you currently analyze whilst mapping.

How does the knock sensor mount onto the block?

The sensor attaches to the block via an M8 x 1.25 bolt.
